Dear Pete:

Thanks a lot for your excellent letter of 2/26. I guess I did not make myself quite clear in stating, "I did not feel exactly right in belonging to the group." On the contrary, I feel honored. My thought was they might resent my belonging since it was not I, but my son who was in the service.

As to "opening up old wounds," the wound is never completely healed, but you have to learn to live with it. I do greatly appreciate your consideration.

Had a letter from Charlie Landells the same day I received yours. He said, among other things, he looked for me in Dayton last year. Also, they were excited about going to England with the group. Joe Warth has been needling me to go. I would love to, but cannot make it this time. Was there in 1979.

Thanks again for everything Pete, and I hope to see you here in Colorado Springs in 1986.

Most sincerely,

Loran M. Bean, Sr.

Dear Pete:

Thank you very much for your nice, informative letter of 24 January 1985. However, I feel that I should explain a few things to you.

My son, Loran M. Bean, Jr. (nicknamed "Buster") was a 44th bomb group pilot. He was killed 16 March 1944 and is buried in Cambridge Memorial Cemetery. I am Loran M. Bean, Sr. (nicknamed "Zeb").

A few years ago I was on a bus, returning from a trip and I met a chaplain on his way to Colorado Springs to attend an 8th Air Force meeting. After a long conversation, he invited me to come down to Four Seasons Hotel and meet Joe Warth. This I did and Joe invited me to attend the gathering in Phoenix, Arizona, which I did. Then I was asked to join the group. I became a sort of "honorary paying member." I did not and do not feel exactly right about this, but I am willing to help any way I can.

Most sincerely,

Loran M. Bean, Sr.

P.S. I thought you might like to contact this man. He was a member of my son's crew and has kept in touch with me all these years. Charles Landells, 193 Woodridge Ave, Woodridge, NJ 07075.
